Personal profile

Louis Pozo was appointed Consultant in Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery to the Royal United Hospital, Bath, and Consultant with special interest in Knee Surgery to the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in 1989. He qualified from Oxford University in 1974 and the Royal College of Surgeons (London) in 1980, and completed his training on the Westminster & University College Rotation scheme.

His main interest is in the field of knee surgery. His appointment to the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases (a major referral centre for the South West and Wales) has provided him with extensive expertise in the treatment of patients with serious multiple joint problems and severely damaged knees, which affect not only the older but also young patients with rheumatic disease.

Louis Pozo has extensive experience in both arthroscopic and open surgery of the knee, and is an expert at complex and reconstructive joint replacement surgery, including revision surgery for patients with failed knee prostheses, patello-femoral replacements for patients with isolated patello-femoral arthritis and unicondylar knee replacements for patients with early limited osteoarthritis of the tibio-femoral joints.

He has a great interest in research and teaching, and continually aspires to improve the quality of care and clinical outcomes for his patients. An example is the introduction of autologous blood transfusion for patients having total knee replacement surgery in Bath. This procedure allows patient to be transfused with their own blood thus ensuring they do not need to receive blood from an unknown donor.

His teaching commitments have included national courses for teaching arthroscopic surgery techniques at the Royal College of Surgeons, and regular involvement in local training programmes for medical students, physiotherapists, Specialist Registrars, and General Practitioners. He has regularly presented research work at national and international meetings, and has published articles on many orthopaedic subjects.
